Michigan State Spartans target top recruit Brandon McCoy Jr.

Michigan State Spartans target top recruit Brandon McCoy Jr.

Michigan State and head coach Tom Izzo are looking to sign players for the 2025 class. Izzo is pursuing several big names, including one of the state’s top guards, promising prospect Trey McKenney, and one of its top forwards, Niko Bundalo. Izzo is also interested in Trent Sisley and Jordan Scott, two players with outstanding skills as well.

Now, the Spartans also appear to be looking to the future and the Class of 2026. The United States U17 national team is currently competing in the U17 FIBA World Championship and faced New Zealand at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Turkey. One player the Spartans value most on the roster, No. 1 recruit Brandon McCoy Jr., had a great night. A post by HS Top Recruits on X, formerly known as Twitter, listed the stats.

McCoy is the No. 1 player in the class of 2026 and the best point guard according to the 247Sports Composite. The St. John Bosco product was reportedly contacted by Michigan State after June 15 gave the Spartans the opportunity to contact him. 247Sports’ Eric Bossi wrote about McCoy’s prowess at the U17 Trials in Colorado Springs.

“After taking some time to fit in and do the little things, Brandon McCoy came to life Sunday night,” Bossi wrote. “The 6-foot-4 guard from California was nearly impossible for defenders to stop off the dribble. He got to any spot he wanted. McCoy finished at the basket, shot jumpers to keep the defense on its toes and made plenty of plays for others. Perhaps most impressive was his work on defense and how often he was able to rise out of a crowd of much bigger players and grab contested rebounds.”

McCoy is a complete player with outstanding performance on both ends of the court. Defense is an important aspect that Izzo values in a player. McCoy is the type of player that could potentially lead the Spartans and Izzo to their second national title. Jamie Shaw of On3 also praised McCoy after training camp in Colorado Springs.

“He has quick feet and active hands and excellent length,” Shaw wrote. “He also has the will and determination to defend and can quickly turn defense into an easy attack position. McCoy will need to continue to gain strength, as you would expect from any rising junior in high school, to be able to compete in the half-court, but his knack for applying pressure at the point of attack and his toughness and willingness to make plays on defense keep him at the top of the conversation list in this class.”

There is still plenty of time to recruit McCoy and the competition will be fierce, but Izzo is clearly targeting the top prospect. Izzo is not being ruled out.
