The overlooked war action film of 2019 Triple limit had a star-studded cast that deserves more recognition. Directed by JC Chandor, whose other works include An extremely violent year (2017), All is lost (2013) and Margin call (2011), Triple limit is surprisingly only the fourth feature film by Chandor, who was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Margin call. Triple limit is based on a screenplay by Chandor and Mark Boal, the Oscar-winning screenwriter and producer by Kathryn Bigelow Deadly Commando – The Hurt Locker And Zero dark thirty. Triple limit can be streamed exclusively on Netflix.


With so much critical acclaim as evidence Triple limitit is somewhat shocking that the film has not garnered the attention of Chandor and Boal’s previous works. The film received mostly positive reviews, achieving a critics’ score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, but interestingly only an audience score of 58%. Fortunately for fans of the star-studded original, there is a sequel to Triple limit is under development and is expected to be released in the near future. Triple limit 2 is said to be produced by Charlie Hunnam, but there is no official guarantee that he will be in production.

Triple limit received only a short one-week theatrical release on March 6, 2019, before being released directly on Netflix on March 13 of the same year. Due to this release strategy, the box office results of Triple limit are in no way an indicator of its success or quality. Netflix reported that Triple limit was one of the most popular new releases and original films of the year, 63 million views in the first month aloneIt’s no surprise that a huge ensemble cast, backed by a script from a previous Oscar winner, would resonate widely on the streaming platform.

Triple limit follows a group of former US Army Delta Force agents consisting of Affleck, Pascal, Issac, Hunnam and Hedlund, who reunite to orchestrate the robbery of a South American crime boss named Gabriel Martin Lorea. It is a very interesting story as this Former members of the special forces are being led astray in a way and organize themselves independently of the interest and command of the US military. The team collectively goes to the villain side for their own self-interest and, as you might expect from other classic heist movies, not everything goes exactly according to plan.

What the film does well, though — if not enough — is introduce the characters’ complicated motivations and the reasons why they’re undertaking this somewhat impossible mission..”

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone writes in his negative review of Triple limitThis Netflix action smash gets by in terms of mindless escapism, but its attempt to sell itself as something deeper is beyond salvaging..” Given some of the action failures Netflix has had to endure in recent years, such as Kevin Hart’s miserable Elevator (2024), Triple limit looks much better in hindsight. A Rotten Tomatoes rating of 70% is not bad at all, but with an incredible cast and the combined efforts of Chandor and Boal, Triple limit deserves more recognition.
