Netflix’s “Man on Fire” series casts “A Small Light” star Billie Boullet as female lead

Billie Boullet will star alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the upcoming Netflix series “Man on Fire,” the streamer announced on Thursday.

Boullet, best known for her leading role in “A Small Light,” will play Poe Rayburn, a young woman who is dissatisfied with her life after her family moves to Brazil. When she witnesses a tragic incident, her perspective on family and life changes. According to the official logline, she quickly learns that her only ally is John Creasy (Abdul-Mateen II).

“Man on Fire” is based on AJ Quinnell’s book series and revolves around Creasy, a “once highly functional and experienced special forces mercenary known for surviving even the most desperate situations.” The book series was also adapted into an action film in 2004, starring Denzel Washington, Christopher Walken and Dakota Fanning.

Boullet is expected to reprise Fanning’s role in the film version, albeit under a different character name.

The official synopsis for the new series states: “Determined to conquer his personal demons, (Creasy) embarks on a path to redemption. But before he can adjust to this new life, he finds himself back in the fire, fighting harder than ever.”

Boullet is a relatively new actress and her roles include Anne Frank in A Small Light and Fenella Feverfew in The Worst Witch. She will next play the role of Willa in the upcoming sci-fi film World-Breaker, starring Luke Evans and Milla Jovovich.

The eight-episode drama series was written, produced and directed by Kyle Killen (“Halo,” “Awake” and “Lone Star”). Abdul-Mateen II also serves as EP alongside Steven Caple Jr. (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Creed II”), who will direct the first two episodes.

Additional EPs include Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann for New Regency Productions, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Tracey Cook for Chernin Entertainment, Scott Pennington for Chapter Eleven and Stacy Perskie for RedRum, as well as Ed McDonnell and Michael Polaire.
