Meghan Markle wanted free clothes from Victoria Beckham: Book

Megan Markle longed to be as classy as Victoria Beckham.

During her engagement to Prince Harry, Markle reportedly asked the Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer for free clothes and handbags. But the request was “rejected by Buckingham Palace because it was against the rules,” reveals celebrity biographer Tom Bower in his new book, “The House of Beckham,” out now in the UK and in the US on Tuesday.

This is just part of the controversy that led to Markle snubbing David and Victoria Beckham.

The Suits actress was once so close to the Beckhams that she stayed at their Beverly Hills home during a trip to Los Angeles. Bower writes that “a member of Victoria’s staff” gave her beauty tips on the best facials and hairdressers in London when Markle was engaged to Prince Harry.

But Markle quickly lost trust in Victoria when she believed the designer had leaked a story to the press.

“It was only when The Sun reported that Victoria had given Meghan makeup tips that the relationship between the two ambitious women broke down,” Bower writes, noting that Markle was sensitive to the “media investigation into her unusual past.”

“Harry was instructed to complain to David Beckham,” writes Bower, whereupon the former soccer star asks Victoria how The Sun got the gossip.

Victoria reportedly denied tipping off the tabloid and blamed a beautician.

The growing tension – which Bower said was fuelled in part by Markle’s apparent jealousy of the Beckhams’ more money and access to luxury items such as private jets and yachts – reached its peak when Markle allegedly snubbed the Beckhams at her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

The Beckhams were present at the event, but Bower claims Victoria, 50, felt “insulted” because she and David, 49, were not invited to a dinner attended by celebrities such as George Clooney.

Bower notes that Posh Spice looked “stony-faced” in photos from the ceremony at St. George’s Chapel.

Markle also showed her support for Victoria professionally, wearing a coat from her collection at Christmas 2018 and another piece a year later at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.

Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the Beckhams still seems to be strained. According to reports, the two were not invited to the lavish wedding of David and Victoria’s son Brooklyn Beckham to Nicola Peltz in Palm Beach in 2022.
