Why was Teoscar Hernández substituted for Chris Taylor by the Dodgers in their loss to the Rockies?

The Los Angeles Dodgers decided to take Teoscar Hernández out of Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies. With the Dodgers leading 6-4 in the seventh inning, manager Dave Roberts took Hernández off the field and replaced him with Chris Taylor.

Roberts had actually considered giving Hernández a day off during his team’s series against the Colorado Rockies. Hernández has yet to have a full day off this season, but has pulled out of several games early to build up his endurance for the season.

“Before this series, I was thinking about giving him a day off,” Roberts said, via Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times… “I felt that for a day game (on Thursday), it might be beneficial to have CT out there to give Teo a couple of innings of rest,” Roberts said, noting that Hernández “could help us win a game tomorrow.”

Unfortunately, the Dodgers’ lead wasn’t enough to pull off a win on Wednesday. After Hernández left the game, the Rockies scored two runs in the seventh inning and another in the ninth to win 7-6.

Hernández was a crucial force in the Dodgers’ lineup all season, with 18 home runs and 54 RBIs. His absence at the end of the game was tough on the Dodgers trying to secure the win. Taylor has struggled mightily, hitting just .115/.211/.177 this season.

Of course, Hernández’s elimination is not the only reason for the Dodgers’ loss. Yohan Ramirez was brought in in the ninth inning to secure a 6-6 tie, but could not hold it.

A loss probably won’t cost the Dodgers anything in the long run, and it’s vitally important to the team that key players like Hernández are healthy for the rest of the year and the postseason.
