Man strangles lover in hotel in Raipur and then commits suicide: Police

Raipur:

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly killed by a 30-year-old man, believed to be her lover, before he committed suicide on a railway track in Raipur, police said on Sunday, citing preliminary investigations.

Vani Goyal’s body was found in a hotel room, while Vishal Garg (30) was found dead on the railway tracks near Urkura railway station earlier in the day.

Family members of Goyal, a resident of Saraswati police station, filed a missing person report on Saturday, following which the police launched a search operation, an official said.

“Goyal’s cellphone location was tracked in Nagpur in neighbouring Maharashtra and a police team rushed there. The police officials found her cellphone but could not locate her,” he said.

Garg’s body was found on a railway track near Urkura railway station in the jurisdiction of Khamtarai police station, he said.

Garg was a resident of Ambikapur town in Surguja district.

The police subsequently received information that Goyal was found dead on the floor of a room in the Babylon Inn hotel in Jail Road area of Raipur, the official said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman was beaten and strangled to death, he said, adding that the exact cause of death would be determined in the autopsy report.

Documents and video surveillance footage show that the duo checked into the hotel around 1.30pm on Saturday.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that Garg murdered the woman before committing suicide. However, investigation in the case is still underway,” he added.
