Packers coach talks about Jordan Love’s improvement in pocket

One of the biggest topics for the Green Bay Packers this offseason has been contract negotiations with quarterback Jordan Love. Although he is seeking a long-term deal, he has participated in all of the offseason programs.

Jordan Love is under pressure in his second year as a starter. People want to see him play at a higher level for more than eight games to put to rest any worries that the final stretch of 2023 was no fluke.

To ensure this, the Packers coaches worked hard with him in the offseason. One area of focus for Jordan Love this offseason was his footwork.

He has all the talent in the world, as evidenced by his performance last season. To help him take his game to the next level, quarterback coach Tom Clements has had him focus on footwork to improve his performance in the pocket.

“It’s just more fundamental things,” Clements said. “Footwork and how he moves in the pocket, and we’re working on the drills, on throwing a lot of routes in the air because you can’t have defenders out there at this point. It’s just about presence in the pocket, when to move, when not to move, things like that.” (H/T ProFootballTalk)

In previous offseasons, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur avoided 7-on-7 maneuvers, not believing it would provide much benefit without an active pass rush and good defense.

But his mindset has changed on that front. The Packers have been playing 7-on-7, allowing them to focus on helping Jordan Love perfect his footwork in the pocket.

Clements has been a mainstay in Green Bay for years, working with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers and supporting them during their Hall of Fame careers. The Packers hope he can have a similar impact on Jordan Love, who is supremely talented and hopes to take his game to new levels in 2024.
