The 10 Best Science Fiction Book Series to Read in 2024 – Destructoid

The 10 Best Science Fiction Book Series to Read in 2024 – Destructoid

When choosing a science fiction book series to read in 2024, you will have to choose from a long list that includes both modern works and classics.

There’s a difference between focusing on a single book and a series. The latter requires a lot more resources, as a series usually consists of three or more titles. If you decide to invest your time in a single title, you’ll have to really dig in. Not all collections are worth the time and energy, but the seven science fiction book series mentioned in this list deserve their place.

The 10 best science fiction book series to read in 2024

For this list, I’ve focused mostly on relatively newer series rather than classics. There is plenty of classic literature in the realm of science fiction series that might be worth your time. However, I’ve decided to focus more on the relatively newer series as these often require more in-depth discussion.

Frank Herbert’s dune The series is the oldest entry in terms of years of publication. This science fiction book series has gained a new level of popularity thanks to the films Dune 1 and 2. However, the books are much more detailed (quite naturally) and cover the main and subplots with more depth. The main series consists of three books that make up the original trilogy, but there have been additional entries in the form of God Emperor of the Desert Planet, The Heretics of DuneAnd Chapter House DuneThe books are available as single copies and trilogies.

“Wool” cover from the Silo book series
about William Morrow Paperbacks

I’ll be honest – I first heard about the books in the Apple TV series (which is fantastic in itself). The silo Written by Hugh Howey, the trilogy is a grim depiction of a post-apocalyptic world where humanity survives, naturally, in silos. The outside world is said to be dangerous and uninhabitable, and yet some want to break the rules to venture outside. Thus begins the battle between laws and humanity’s desire to break them (even if the cost is terrible).

Pines Trilogy

The Stubborn pines The trilogy is one of my favorite science fiction book series of all time. Blake Crouch uses his pen skills to sketch out an amazing plot that is a mix of time travel, post-apocalypse, and monster movies. At first, everything seems fun and lighthearted until secret service agent Ethan Burke starts to question his reality. So begins his quest to uncover the conspiracy, but the truth can sometimes be too much of a burden, to such an extent that it can destroy reality itself. All three books are amazing reads, full of adrenaline and lots of action.

Red Rising Saga five books

Red Rising Saga is one of those rare science fiction series that can be worth your time at any time. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got my hands on the first book, but little did I know that it would become one of my favorites. Pierce Brown makes you root for Darrow, who is at the receiving end of the unjust system. The entire Red Rising SagaConsisting of six books, the book shows that man’s lust for power will be omnipresent – whether on Earth or in space – but people will always fight back when treated harshly.

Three-body problem

If you are a fan of science and all its concepts (some of which are usually beyond my scope), The three-body problem The trilogy is a perfect fit. Cixin Liu’s works have been translated into English and the Netflix series has given the trilogy new popularity. Not only do the three books offer more plot depth, but readers don’t have to rely on Netflix to find out what happens after the first season. Publisher Heads of Zeus has also released a new box set that is available worldwide.

Children of Time

The Children of Time The trilogy is one of the newest works on this list of the best science fiction series starting in 2024. I love Tchaikovsky’s writing style because he explains the most complex concepts in a clear way, and the first book in this series is a perfect proof of that. Although all three books are connected, you can also enjoy them individually. The plot is relatively simple compared to some of the other science fiction book series on this list. I really liked the underlying theme of the series, and the books will definitely be worth your time.

The Expanse became the first science fiction book series where I ended up buying the entire set (which is a challenge, since there are ten books in total). If you start this grand space opera in 2024, there are plenty of box sets available at Orbit. From political conspiracies to a mysterious organic agent that leaves death in its wake, The wide has something for everyone. There is also an Amazon Prime Video series, but the books are easier to follow and enjoy.

Neuromancer cover

Urban sprawl The trilogy is certainly one of the older science fiction book series, as they were written in the 1980s. However, William Gibson’s writings are still a source of entertainment for anyone who loves futuristic concepts surrounding computers. Interestingly, all three books – Neuromancer, Count ZeroAnd Monalisa Overdrivecan be enjoyed as standalone titles. However, they all take place in the same universe, have overlapping characters, and share subtle similarities in storylines.

Neil Shusterman’s Scythe The trilogy is set in a future where humanity has managed to conquer all mortalities. However, the population must be kept in balance, and the Scythedom must ensure that humans suffer their deserved fate. Citra and Rowan’s journey begins as simple apprentices seeking to join the Scythedom, and what begins as a suicide soon reveals itself to be a deeper conspiracy. For those who wish to prolong their enjoyment, a fourth book of tales from the world of Scythe is also available.

The Foundation, endowment is one of the immortal works in the world of science fiction book series. In fact, the seven-title series is widely considered Asimov’s best work of all time. Interestingly, you can enjoy the series as a trilogy consisting of the first three novels – Foundation, Foundation and Empire, And Second Foundation. The first three titles are followed by four more. Although it is difficult to summarize the plot in a few sentences, you can expect an exciting mix of politics, grand conspiracy and action in all seven titles.
