Chris Berman is a legend among legends. He has more iconic catchphrases to his credit – “HE COULD GO ALL THE WAY,” “Da Raiderrrrs,” “Back, back, back!” – than any other sportscaster in history. He helped transform ESPN from a niche network into the world’s leader. He lived through personal tragedy and came out of it smiling. Maybe his gruff manner wasn’t the best for golf, but he truly is the GOAT.
But his golf game? Well, that’s another story. On Wednesday, “Boom” made his annual appearance at the Travelers Championship Pro-Am – truly a tradition like no other. Berman, along with Doug Flutie and Co., battled through the TPC River Highlands and survived a severe New England heat wave more or less unscathed. His ego may not have come out so unscathed, however, after fellow golfer Scott Van Pelt provided a hilarious recap of Boom’s appearance on SportsCenter at Night.
That Scottie Scheffler shot comparison is worth its weight in gold. Judging by this highlights package, Berman may be on his way to replacing Charles Barkley as the celebrity golfer with the worst swing, but he still pumped up the crowd and had a great time. And like Bryson last weekend at Pinehurst, Berman’s greenside feel remains pure class.
