Two years after X And pearlThe finale of A24 has been released in cinemas and has caused a lot of hype. As an avid horror fan, I am MaXXXine with high expectations. X is one of my favorite horror movies, and Mia Goth has incredible acting skills that can carry even the weakest movie. Thankfully, Ti West’s latest film did not disappoint. MaXXXine is one of the best horror movies of 2024, alongside I saw the glow on TV And Abigail.

The film explores Maxine Minx’s desperation for fame and notoriety in the acting business outside of the porn genre. Alongside the titular protagonist, she is one of the most compelling characters in MaXXXine is the fictional director Elizabeth Bender, played by Golden Globe-winning actress Elizabeth Debicki. Maxine not only gets a realistic insight into Hollywood’s ruthlessness, Elizabeth delivers a quote that stayed in my mind long after the film ended because it is the last film in Ti West’s X Trilogy.

Ti West seems to understand what horror fans like and want. The imagery in his film is unapologetically titillating, raunchy, sleazy and dark. MaXXXine also has well-developed characters and a strong message and deals with socially relevant topics. By combining B-movie elements and A-ideas, MaXXXine creates a story that is as clever as it is entertaining.

The film is a homage to the genre, MaXXXine fits into the category of an exploitation thriller. Unlike the films from the 80s, however, Ti West’s film has a more modern touch. While the people protesting in the film do not support sex work, the message in MaXXXine herself is very pro-sex work. I was happy to see Maxine Minx make it clear to casting directors that acting in porn is still acting, because she’s right.

MaXXXineThe ending of questions the unethical behavior of religious leaders and has the charismatic televangelist commit murder. Furthermore, in a world where information is more accessible than ever, the message that a person’s past can affect their chance at fame is felt more strongly than in the past. Ultimately, it is exciting to see that MaXXXine found a way to modernize the exploitation thriller genre and move away from some of the more sexist and superficial messages.
