Assam student stabs teacher in classroom

Guwahati: In a horrific incident, a Class 11 student stabbed his teacher to death in the classroom of a school in Sivasagar district of Upper Assam on Saturday. The 16-year-old, who attacked chemistry teacher Rajesh Babu Bejawada (55) after he was scolded for poor performance, has been arrested and is being interrogated.

Mr. Bejawada taught chemistry and also held management positions at a private school.

Police said the teacher scolded the student for his performance in chemistry and asked him to invite his parents to a meeting at school. Later that day, the student came to class in casual clothes. The teacher asked him to leave. Suddenly, the student attacked Mr. Bejawada and stabbed him repeatedly with a knife.

Students who witnessed the stabbing said the defendant was wearing casual clothes when he entered the classroom. The teacher told him to leave and yelled at him when he didn’t listen.

“He pulled out a knife, hit the teacher on the head and stabbed him. We did not know that he was carrying a knife. Our teacher was lying on the ground and bleeding profusely,” said the students while narrating the horrific incident. The teacher was taken to Dibrugarh but died on the way to the hospital.

The incident came as a shock to the teachers who expressed surprise over the incident and blamed the growing intolerance among the students for the incident. The teachers expressed their deep shock over the incident and said that such incidents are alarming as discipline is necessary to secure the future of the students.

Mr. Bejawada lived in Andhra Pradesh and worked as a senior teacher at Sai Vikash Academy, Savasagar.
