Netanyahu’s criminal trials impact Gaza war, hostage families say – Israel News

A group of hostage families and parents of soldiers and reservists submitted a petition to the Supreme Court on Thursday calling on the Attorney General’s Office to investigate whether decisions made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the war were influenced by the ongoing criminal trial.

The applicants, represented by attorney Dafna Holtz Lechner, wrote that they sent a letter on May 8 inquiring whether the prime minister’s conflict of interest agreement, which he signed in 2020, applied to his decisions regarding the war. The applicants said they received no response and requested that the Supreme Court order the attorney to respond immediately.

The May 8 letter to the Attorney General was based on a Supreme Court ruling issued a few days earlier that rejected a petition similar to the current one, but noted that if Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara believes there is a conflict of interest between the prime minister waging the war and his criminal case, she must update the agreement accordingly.

For example, the plaintiffs argued that Netanyahu had requested several postponements of his criminal trial because he was busy waging the war, showing that the prime minister had an interest in prolonging the war in order to delay his trial.

In a statement, the applicants also said they had argued that they were the citizens most affected by decisions regarding the war and that the Prime Minister’s decisions could affect them immensely, whether on the length and extent of reserve service, the risk to soldiers, the welfare of hostages, or all of these points.

Holtz Lechner said in the statement: “We hear politicians and security officials say every day that Netanyahu acted out of personal considerations and not in the national interest in matters that are fateful for the State of Israel and its citizens. If this is indeed the case, the Attorney General must act with the utmost urgency to meet the demand of those who have paid and continue to pay the price for the failure (on October 7) and the ongoing war.”
