WestJet and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) have agreed to return to the negotiating table to prevent further flight cancellations from disrupting summer travel plans.

AMFA represents WestJet’s aircraft maintenance engineers (AME) and other tech ops employees. The union announced a 72-hour strike on Monday, June 17, after the airline withdrew from negotiations scheduled for June 19 and 20.

In response, WestJet cancelled 40 flights, affecting approximately 6,500 passengers, ahead of the strike. According to a statement from the airline, the cancellations were necessary “to park the aircraft in a safe and organized manner” before the industrial action took effect.

AMFA has withdrawn its strike notice and both parties are returning to the negotiating table.

“We recognize the impact the initial cancellations have had on our guests and our employees, and we sincerely appreciate their patience and understanding during this time,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer. “As we return to the negotiating table, we are committed to finding a solution to avoid further disruption to our operations.”

Today (June 20), WestJet appeared before the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to discuss the airline’s arbitration request. The CIRB stated that the panel needed more time to consider the detailed submissions from both parties before making a decision.
