Short Track Super Series in Bridgeport: Storylines, Stars and Surprises

The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS), operated by Sunoco, returns to the Bridgeport Motorsports Park on Sunday night for the South Jersey Shootout.

The steeply banked four-tenths-mile oval will be the focus of a 50-lap STSS Big-Block/Small-Block Modifieds feature race with a $5,000 prize.

The STSS returns to Bridgeport Motorsports Park for the first time since 2022 after three separate attempts in 1923 were all canceled due to rain.

The storylines

Although the STSS schedule is full for the month of July, today’s event is the only race on the NJ Quality Drywall South Region schedule this month.

The overall Ollie Championship reaches double figures as Round 10 of the Combined Chase takes place tonight while the Southern Region continues with Round 6.

Anthony Perrego of Walden, NY, continues his quest for the STSS No. 1 title, leading the South Region standings by 13 points over Saint Catherines.

Mat Williamson from Ontario, Canada.

The two teams are neck and neck in the battle for the overall championship title, with Williamson leading by 56 points over Perrego.

THE STARS

Anthony Perrego has been incredibly consistent – aside from one breakaway – on the 2024 STSS Tour. He and car owner Vinnie Salerno are a formidable duo and will look to extend their lead in the South Region with Perrego’s first triumph in Bridgeport.

Matt Stangle of Neshanic Station, NJ, has almost certainly marked the South Jersey Shootout on his calendar. His home track on Saturday night is the perfect place for “Matty Ice” to score his first STSS win.

Mat Williamson has a career win under his belt at the Kingdom of Speed in April 2023. Williamson is another driver with few appearances at Bridgeport, but has undeniably improved his performance in 2024, making him a perennial favorite at any STSS race.

THE SLEEPERS

Sammy Martz Jr. has had only a few STSS starts in his Modified career, and the Whitehouse Station, NJ driver will look to overcome that and score another “big” win after winning the $8,000 Doug Olsen Memorial at his home track less than a month ago.

Dillon Steuer of Bohemia, NY, named the Kingdom of Speed his home track for the 2024 season. Steuer is third in the standings entering Saturday night. He will look to combine his STSS win with his first win at Bridgeport tonight.

Ryan Krachun of Branchburg, NJ, won at Bridgeport this season and is off to a good start in the South Region with a fifth place overall finish. With the two worlds colliding, Krachun will be looking to score his first STSS win.

ALSO IN ACTION

The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman will compete in Round 5 of the Belmont’s Garage South Region. The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman will run 25 laps and have a winner’s share of $1,500.
