Mumbai hit-and-run: ‘Police will not protect anyone,’ says CM Shinde in view of alleged involvement of Sena leader’s son

Amid the furore over a hit-and-run case in Mumbai involving the son of a Shiv Sena politician, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said the culprits would not be spared.

A 45-year-old woman died in the incident on Sunday morning after she was hit by a BMW allegedly driven by the son of a Shiv Sena leader from Palghar in Maharashtra.

“The Mumbai hit-and-run case is very unfortunate. Whoever is guilty will be taken action against him,” said Eknath Shinde.

The Prime Minister added that everyone would be treated equally. “Whatever happens, it will be legal…”

“The law is the same for all and the government treats every case in the same way. There will be no special arrangement for this accident. Everything will be done as per the law,” PTI reported, quoting the CM when asked if the man involved in the Mumbai accident was the son of a Shiv Sena leader.

Shinde said he had spoken to the police to take strict action. “Police will not protect anyone,” CM added.

Kaveri Nakhwa (45), a resident of Koliwada in Worli, who was returning home with her husband, succumbed to her injuries after a BMW two-wheeler collided with the car on the arterial road Annie Besant Road in Worli. She was reportedly dragged on the bonnet of the car for about 100 metres before being thrown into the air.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray visited Worli police station and met senior police officials investigating the case.

“I will not go into the political leanings of Mr Shah, the accused in the hit-and-run incident, but I hope the police will act quickly to nab the accused and bring him to justice. Hopefully, the regime will not give him any political sanctuary,” Thackeray said.

He added that he and MLC Sunil Shinde also met Mr Nakhwa, the victim’s husband, and promised him that they would do everything possible to bring the accused to justice.
