Karen Fults Kaler and Christine Podas-Larson are winners of the Gebhard Awards, which recognize outstanding books and articles on Minnesota’s human-built environment published in the past two years. Presented by the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, Kaler’s book, Eastcliff: History of a Home (University of Minnesota Press), is about the house on the east bank of the Mississippi that has been home to the presidents of the University of Minnesota for more than sixty years. The author lived in the house for eight years while her husband was university president. Podas-Larson wrote the award-winning article, “The Aesthetics of Bridge Design: A Pean to Two of St. Paul’s Elegant Park Bridges,” about the Phalen Park South Cannel Bridge (1910) and the Montreal Bridge (1927) in St. Paul’s Highland Park, both of which are still in use.

Say goodbye to Loft’s Wordplay Festival, which ended without much fanfare and was replaced by a quarterly reading series. That leaves the popular Twin Cities Book Festival, presented by Rain Taxi Review, as the only major event where readers and authors can come together. So mark your calendars for October 19, when the festival welcomes thousands of literature lovers to the Progress Center at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. It will feature award-winning Minnesota authors and others from out of state, rare booksellers, exhibits from local publishers and literary organizations, and a used book/record sale. Admission is free and there is plenty of free parking.
