Spotify’s AI DJ recommends songs from 3 seconds of what people are listening to – it’s mind-blowing

Brands around the world are interested in integrating AI into their daily operations. Spotify has jumped on the AI ​​bandwagon and launched its AI DJ in 2023 to provide better song recommendations to its users. As it turns out, the AI ​​DJ’s persona was based on a real person – Xavier “X” Jernigan, who serves as Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships. Recently, Xavier was spotted doing an interesting street challenge where he recommended songs to random people after listening to the music they were playing on their headphones. The challenge was given to Xavier by @doseofsociety, an Instagram page that conducts vox pop style interviews and brings to light “real stories from real people.”

At the beginning of the video, we see a man being interviewed: “What is something I wouldn’t believe about you?” The man replies: “You may not believe this, but I’m an AI DJ for Spotify. What up, I’m X.” For a brief moment, the man talks about the importance of having a good knowledge of music to fulfill the requirements of the role. Soon after, the interviewer tells Xavier that he wants to give him a challenge. He says: “I want you to take the microphone and go up to some people who are listening to music. Listen to their song for three seconds and give them some recommendations for artists and songs based on what they listen to.” Finding the challenge intriguing, Xavier jumps at the opportunity and begins the challenge.

The video then shows “X” taking the microphone and approaching strangers on the street, asking them to let him listen to the songs on their headphones. First, he grabs a woman and explains the challenge to her. After hearing 3 seconds of the song she was playing, he immediately asks, “Is that Sade?” After that, he cheerfully says, “I can definitely recommend something. Okay.” He then defines the woman’s taste in music as “relaxed vibes” and recommends “Maxwell” to her. Surprised, the woman agrees and says, “Oh my god, it’s so funny you say Maxwell. I love Maxwell.”

In the next frame, he turns to another person. While putting on the headphones and listening to music, X says, “Oh, I like that.” But surprisingly, he says, “I don’t know that band though. Who is that?” The stranger tells him that the song is by a British band called “Foals.” Based on the music he’s heard, X recommends “The Hives” to the man. Soon, the man hears a sample track by the recommended artist and is immediately hooked. With a smile on his face, the AI ​​DJ looks at the camera and says, “I think I won the challenge.”

The hilarious challenge was viewed over 2.7 million times and received over 200,000 likes. The clip also received numerous comments from viewers. While some praised the DJ for his impeccable music knowledge, others were shocked by the revelation that the AI ​​DJ’s voice was based on a real person.

One user, @annekluit.respace, praised the man, commenting, “What an amazing skill! His energy is so open and warm.” Another user, @buuuuuuuurd, commented, “He’s a real voice?! He’s my best friend right now. The only person who’s been a constant these past few months.”
