Taylor Swift’s recent attempt to exclude Charli XCX from a number one entry in the UK album charts shows insecurity and pettiness.

Fans accused the pop star of using shady tactics to try to overshadow Charli XCX’s critically acclaimed album “Brat.”

The timing of Swift’s release of six UK-only album variants is highly questionable. These variants, which contain voice memo demos and live versions of previously released songs, were announced just five hours before the week’s album sales statistics ended. This strategic move ensured that The Tortured Poets Department remained at the top for another week, denying Charli XCX the top spot.

Swift’s actions are a sign of desperation. One can only wonder why a globally successful artist like Swift has to undercut other artists.

“Taylor Swift is only releasing new versions of her boring album in the UK because Charli is expected to hit number 1 there,” one user ranted on X.

This isn’t the first time Swift has used such tactics. A similar album release prevented Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard And Soft” from reaching number one. It seems Swift is constantly stepping on other artists’ toes to assert her reign at the top.

The growing Swift fatigue on the internet is understandable. Her album The Tortured Poets Department, despite its initial success, is starting to wear thin. The sheer number of album variations smacks of overkill. One can’t help but feel that Swift’s relentless self-promotion is overshadowing the genuine talent of other artists.

Charli XCX’s “Brat” received rave reviews. Music critic Brad Taste in Music gave the album 90 out of 100 and published his review on the Album of the Year website.

“Charli combines a sense of self-expression and self-loathing into a surprisingly relatable club album for those who go to clubs for the right reason,” Brad Taste said in Music.

Internet music nerd Anthony Fanatno also gave the record full marks. Several other music review sites such as The Telegraph and The Guardian agreed with Fantano and said that “Brat” was worthy of full marks.

The album’s success is a testament to Charli’s talent and hard work, but instead of celebrating the success of another artist, Swift undermines it.

At a time when female artists should be supporting and encouraging one another, Taylor Swift’s actions are disappointing. By blocking Charli XCX from the top spot, Swift is not only hindering her success; she is also sending the message that there is only room for one woman.
