In the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, an Israeli attack on a school in Gaza killed 16 people and injured 50 others. The death toll was confirmed by the Palestinian Health Ministry, which also said the school had been used as accommodation by displaced people.

The attack hit the Al-Jawni school in Nuseirat in central Gaza. The 50 injured were then taken to a nearby hospital. The Palestinian Health Ministry spoke of a “heinous massacre”. Meanwhile, the Hamas-led government’s press office claimed that 7,000 people had sought shelter in the school.

The medical team on site also confirmed that a journalist had died in the strike. Meanwhile, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, UNRWA, announced that two of its employees had been killed in a strike in Al-Bureij in central Gaza. The agency operates a large food warehouse in the district.

No place in Gaza is safe

Following the incident, many expressed concern about the escalating crisis in Gaza. “Absolutely no place in the Gaza Strip is safe,” said Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the Civil Defense. The war, which was sparked by the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians in the region.

The militants also took hostages, 116 of whom are still in the Gaza Strip. According to the Israeli military, 42 of them are dead.

On the day of the attacks, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had attacked several “terrorists operating in buildings in the area of the Al-Jaouni School.”

“Based on intelligence from the Israel Defense Forces and ISA, the Israeli Air Force struck several terrorists operating in buildings in the area of @UNRWA’s Al-Jaouni school in central Gaza,” the Israeli military wrote on X, also known as Twitter.

“This location served as both a hiding place and operational infrastructure from which attacks on IDF forces operating in Gaza were directed and carried out. Numerous steps were taken prior to the attack to reduce the risk of endangering civilians, including the use of precise aerial surveillance and additional intelligence,” the statement continued.

Eyewitnesses reported BBC that the attack targeted the upper floors of the school, which is located near a busy market. “This is the fourth time they have attacked the school without warning,” said a woman AFP.

The attacks are cause for concern as they come at a time when Israel and Hamas are negotiating a ceasefire.
