The Marvel vs. Capcom series returns with a retro game collection

The Marvel vs. Capcom series returns with a retro game collection

As part of yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, the Marvel vs. Capcom series is being revived with a brand new collection of retro fighting games. The official title is MARVEL vs. CAPCOM Fighting Collection: Arcade classics, This compilation includes a total of seven games – some of which have not been available for home consoles for almost three decades.

Not only was the game announced during Nintendo Direct, but it is also being promoted by the Marvel vs. Capcom X account (formerly Twitter). Although this would normally be expected, the account has been inactive since early 2018. This is around the same time that Capcom stopped providing updates for the somewhat controversial Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, which some saw as a bad omen for the future of the series as a whole. This recent announcement has caused many to change their entire perspective and now believe that this means there could be even more exciting news for the series. Marvel vs Capcom Series.

The Super Nintendo was home to many cult video games, but some excellent fighting titles also appeared on this console.

As mentioned, this collection contains seven unique games. These include six fighting games with a common connection and one beat-em-up title – The Punisher. The Punisher seems a bit of an outlier, but it was the first real collaboration between Marvel and Capcom – and the target audience will experience it as a fun bonus. As for the rest, there is plenty of interesting story to delve into. It is worth noting that while it is the Marvel vs Capcom Series, the very first game – X-Men: Children of the Atom – was not a crossover title. Although Akuma was from Street Fighter as a hidden character, the true roots it planted are the fast-paced, hyperkinetic gameplay the series is known for. As the series evolved, this style of gameplay proved timeless and influential to the genre as a whole – hence why tag team titles are commonly referred to as “versus games” in the fighting game community, even if they aren’t crossover products.

The most praised and coveted of these titles is without doubt Marvel vs. Capcom 2: Age of Heroes. A highly competitive game with many memorable moments thanks to its community, it also suffered from being a licensed game. An updated version of the game was available digitally through the PS3 and Xbox 360 online stores, but was eventually removed from both stores in 2013 – making it inaccessible. Although other titles in the series have since been released, this has still been a sore spot for many who simply want nothing more than for others to enjoy the game as much as they do. This even sparked a social media campaign on X (formerly Twitter) a few years ago under the tag “#FreeMVC2”.

After all this time, it’s hard to say whether or not this collection is a sign of things to come. However, with the implementation of rollback netcode and an impending physical release, some fans may be able to put this matter behind them. While there is no definitive release date yet, players can still expect the collection to arrive on Switch, PS4, and PC later this year.
