The song that Björk wrote together with her daughter

The song that Björk wrote together with her daughter

Many musicians have a distinctive aesthetic, but perhaps no one is more exceptional and striking than Björk. The Icelandic avant-garde innovator is probably one of the most experimental musicians of all time, and her music often tackles various existential themes and issues, from self-identification to environmental and nature issues.

An artist as individual as Björk naturally inspires curiosity about her influences, the original drive behind her career choice, and how she boldly tackles unconventional themes and musical arrangements. In fact, however, Björk’s art draws from many sources, including the groundbreaking singers who broke convention before her.

For example, Joni Mitchell’s more experimental, jazzy album Don Juan’s ruthless daughter first taught the singer vocal control and geographical context. “That was probably the biggest influence on me,” Björk explained in an interview with Mojo“It has this barren, Nordic feel when you look out the window and see no trees. This album is really underrated.”

Although Björk has found a long-time favorite with the album, so much so that she has yet to attempt a reinterpretation of the cherished songs, many other influences lie a little closer to home. As with most artists, the artist finds her first inspirations in the simple mechanics of life on earth. The people, the relationships, the difficulties and the joys of humanity are reflected in her work. Her daughter, for example, left a hole in her soul when she left home, an experience that inspired her to write “Her Mother’s House,” which she wrote and recorded in collaboration with her daughter.

When Isadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney left home, Björk was almost laughably impressed by how clingy she had become as a mother, and so she incorporated this ironic element into the song. To make the melody seem as true and authentic as possible, she encouraged Isadóra to be as honest about their relationship as she wanted.

The result was an incredibly emotional and entertaining song that found both of them going through a transitional period marked by their unbreakable bond. “A mother’s house / Has a room for every child / It just describes the inside / of her heart,” she sings. According to Björk, the lyrics intentionally poke fun at her over-parenting and overprotectiveness.

“I’m trying to make fun of how clumsy and clingy you can be,” she explained to Uncut Magazine. “When the kids leave, you gather up your courage and say goodbye really gracefully, and of course, five years down the line, you’re still saying goodbye and they’re still coming back because you have to help them through things,” she added. “So when I asked my daughter to sing that song with me, it was actually an attempt to poke fun at myself.”
