Jon Landau, famous Titanic producer, dies

Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer of the films “Titanic” and “Avatar,” is no longer with us. He was 63 years old.
News of Landau’s death was confirmed by his son, Jamie Landau. He died Friday in Los Angeles, and the cause of death was not disclosed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Landau was a long-time production partner of James Cameron. He worked with him on the blockbusters “Titanic” and “Avatar.”

Last February, Landau recalled his first collaboration with Cameron, when he was at Fox and oversaw the director’s 1994 action comedy True Lies. “I think Jim was a little skeptical. He said, ‘So I understand we’re going to be pretty good friends. Or maybe not,'” Landau told Deadline’s Pete Hammond with a laugh in Behind the Lens.

Landau was born in New York on July 23, 1960. His parents, Ely A. Landau and Edie Landau, owned movie theaters in Manhattan, founded the American Film Theater, and produced more than a dozen films, including Long Day’s Journey into Night (1962), The Pawnbroker (1965), The Iceman (1973), and The Chosen One (1981).
Landau first became a producer on Paramount’s “Campus Man” (1987) and then co-produced two Disney films: “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” by Joe Johnston and “Dick Tracy” by Warren Beatty.
Before his death, Landau was instrumental in the creation of the “Avatar” sequels.
