Jury finds Amherst woman guilty of murdering her newborn baby

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) — A jury found an Amherst woman guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her newborn baby.

The Erie County District Attorney’s Office announced that 32-year-old Andee R. Wright was found guilty by the jury after about two hours of deliberation following a six-day trial. Wright was found guilty of one of two counts of murder in the indictment.

According to the prosecutor, Wright gave birth to a 37-week-old infant on Oct. 5, 2020, in a bathroom of a home on Eggert Road in the town of Tonawanda and did not call 911 for medical help for herself or the baby. The prosecutor said Wright was found later that morning by her boyfriend, who called 911. Wright was taken to the hospital and the newborn was found dead by paramedics in a trash can in the basement.

Prosecutors said the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that the baby, who was born alive, died of blunt force trauma to the brain.

“This is a disturbing case of a woman who concealed her pregnancy and killed her own newborn baby. Although this was a difficult case, we were determined to obtain justice for the death of Baby Boy Wright. The evidence showed that the baby was born alive, and the jury agreed that the defendant intentionally murdered her own newborn son.”

– Acting Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane

Wright’s sentencing is scheduled for September 9. She faces 25 years to life in prison and was ordered held without bail pending sentencing.
