Chris Gascoyne from “Coronation Street” lands first major role since leaving the soap

Coronation Street actor Chris Gascoyne has signed a contract to star in new Channel 5 drama The Feud.

It is the soap star’s first role since leaving the cobbles for a “long break” last December. Gascoyne has played Peter Barlow in several roles since 2000.

Former EastEnders and The Holiday actress Jill Halfpenny stars in the thriller as Emma Barnett, while Rupert Penry-Jones, known from Spooks, plays her husband John.

Other leading roles include Larry Lamb (Gavin & Stacey), Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (Derry Girls), James Fleet (The Vicar of Dibley) and Amy Nuttall (Downton Abbey).

Emma and John Barnett seem to lead an idyllic life in Shelbury Drive with their daughter Beth (newcomer Megan Trower) and maintain good friendships with their neighbors Sonia and Alan and the older couple Derek and Barbara.

But relationships in the friendly residential street soon deteriorate after Emma and John add a kitchen extension to their house.

“When objections are raised to the plans, unexpected skeletons in the closet and life-threatening secrets come to light,” the synopsis states.

“With a dash of menace, The Feud shows how Emma’s ambitious dream abruptly turns into obsession, paranoia and fear.

“One decision sets in motion events that have unpredictable consequences for both you and the people on your street.”

The cast also includes Alex Macqueen (The Inbetweeners), Judith Alexander (Coronation Street), Joel Beckett (EastEnders, Casualty) and newcomers Luke Hammond and Joel Kai Ali.

Filming for the six-part series has begun on location in Newcastle. “The Feud” is scheduled to air on Channel 5 in 2025.
