Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has won the 2024 general election, but where does our new Prime Minister come from?

The 61-year-old grew up in the suburbs of Kent and Surrey.

The lawyer-turned-politician studied at Leeds University and St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. Starmer moved to North London and has called the area his home ever since. In 2014, he was knighted for his services to “law and criminal justice” and took over the role of leader of the Labour Party in April 2020.

According to House and Garden, he moved between Archway, Highgate and Stoke Newington and now lives in Kentish Town with his wife Victoria and their two children. The couple bought their home in 2004 for around £600,000 and since then its value has roughly doubled.

Keir also reportedly owns a 7-acre property in Surrey next to his parents’ home, which he inherited in 1996.

The Starmers have many celebrity neighbours in the area. Megastars Harry Styles and Benedict Cumberbatch are regularly spotted in the Heath area, and Labour colleague Ed Miliband apparently lives just down the road.

The area is rich in history: Karl Marx, Lucien Freud and George Michael are buried in the famous Highgate Cemetery and Keats House, where John Keats lived and worked, is open to visitors.

He lives there with his wife Victoria Alexander and their two children, a son, Toby, and a daughter whose name has never been made public.

Victoria was a lawyer before working in occupational health in the NHS and becoming a headteacher at her children’s school. After meeting Keir when both were working as lawyers, the couple married in 2007.
