Based on what we’ve seen online lately, we’d like to gently remind you that you can love Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty AND Smiling Friends.

Let’s get this out of the way right at the start so we can get over it. I’m a big fan of Daniel Harmon and justinroilands Rick and MortyI’m a big fan of Michael Cusack And Zach Hadel‘S Smiling friends. At no point did I feel the need to choose between the two. Why? Because they are both excellent and unique animated series. They are not a couple that broke up and now everyone has to choose a side. And yet there is this growing sentiment on social media that you have to love them. Smiling friends means that you have a steaming pile of hate in Rick and Morty – which makes absolutely no sense. I’m pretty sure there’s no “iron throne” at Adult Swim where there’s only room for one big show. I don’t want to speak on behalf of the late-night programming block, but I think it’s safe to say they’d be more than happy to have a dozen shows that everyone’s talking about.

So just enjoy either show – or both! Cusack and Hadel have been bringing their crazy multimedia magic to our screens for two seasons – and a well-deserved third season (and hopefully many more) is on the way. After overcoming the fallout from JustinRoiland, showrunner Harmon Scott Marderand the creative team has given us perhaps the best season of the Emmy-winning series yet (with great praise to Ian Cardoni And Harry Belden for handling the pressure of joining the cast and making the season great). But if you are a Justin Roiland fan who is following the success of Smiling friends as a strange way to strike back Rick and Morty for wronging you in some way you made up in your head, related to what should have been a simple personnel decision that had absolutely nothing to do with you. It’s time to sit down, because you’re not contributing anything to the discussion.

The creators of Smiling Friends want the series to have an “Always Sunny” mood

During Adult Swim’s presentation at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Festival, Hadel addressed whether viewers should expect darker and/or more serious themes in upcoming seasons – similar to what we’ve seen from other animated series with those “special” episodes. “A lot of comedy shows, as you say, tend to get serious,” Hadel responded to a question from an attendee. “I don’t think Charlie and Pim could cry and it would bother anyone. It would just be annoying. So it would probably end before it got to that point.” Hadel continued, “This show is hopefully a kind of escape. We always think back to when we still had minimum wage jobs; we would come home and just want to watch YouTube cartoons and South Park and (It’s) Always Sunny (in Philadelphia). There’s something beautiful about being a little comedy thing, and that’s all.”

And there it is! Are we surprised? No – but as a die-hard fan of FXX Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson and Daniel DeVito-with it’s always sunny in PhiladelphiaI know we don’t always make our love for the best sitcom ever to hit television public, so when one of us does, it’s nice to see – and when it’s two talented people like Cusack and Hadel, even more so.

“Something like ‘South Park.’ When I saw the episode where Stan gets depressed, I loved it because Trey (Parker) and Matt (Stone) do that so well when they get serious. I think we just keep a consistent tone with ‘Smiling Friends’ so you can tune in every season. You don’t really know where you stand,” Cusack added. And for those of you wondering when the season-spanning storylines will air in sequels, Hadel makes it clear that fans shouldn’t hold their breath anytime soon. “I don’t think we’ll ever do a sequel series. It’s just meant to be popcorn. It’s the McDonald’s of television,” Hadel explained.
