Columbus woman convicted of infant death

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A woman facing multiple charges in connection with the death of her toddler received her sentence Thursday after pleading guilty in court.

A Franklin County Court of Common Pleas judge sentenced the woman to 10 days in jail for manslaughter after she pleaded guilty in April.

The ruling stems from an incident in August 2022 in which a little girl died from drowning after the mother left the child alone in a bathtub with two other toddlers in the house.

Police said the baby was not breathing after being found in the tub and was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next day.

The coroner ruled that the death was a case of homicide. He stated that the child had drowned in the family home while the person responsible for caring for the baby was absent, and that “the lack of precaution for the child’s safety” had therefore contributed to the child’s death.

The woman was charged with manslaughter, one count of child endangerment and three counts of child endangerment.

The sentence against the woman includes five years’ probation, drug testing and the assumption of all child care duties required by the court.
