Catholic Action Center asks for help in feeding the homeless on the Fourth of July weekend

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – Active weather on the Fourth of July could mean a difficult weekend for the homeless.

That’s why leaders at the Catholic Action Center in Lexington have been working overtime to prepare to help.

“It’s always wonderful when the city celebrates, but when this happens, people are often left out. Whether it’s food, shelter or a cool place to go,” said Ginny Ramsey, director of the Catholic Action Center.

Ramsey told LEX 18 that June was a particularly busy month for employees, a time of year that is already considered a time of great hardship.

“Of course, we see an increase in the need for food when school is out. There are families picking up their breakfast, lunch and dinner at our kitchen door,” Ramsey said.

“It’s unbelievable what we’ve been through in the last month. Not only has it been so hot and so many people are on the streets, but with the holiday season, some of the usual places where people normally buy food aren’t open.”

On Thursday, Catholic Action Center staff felt their inventory was low heading into the weekend, so they asked the parish for help.

A post was published on Facebook asking for donations of sandwiches to distribute.

Ramsey was confident that the community would respond generously to her request and expected over 2,000 sandwiches to be brought to help those in need.

“We have such a compassionate community, otherwise I wouldn’t be standing here after 25 years,” Ramsey said.

“Our church in Lexington, Kentucky, is an amazing, compassionate community that will answer the call.”

If you would like to donate, the center is looking for sandwiches, bags of chips and water bottles to prepare complete meals to distribute.

Donations can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at 1055 Industry Road in Lexington.
