I am an artist who designs luxury holiday homes

An artist has revealed her tips and tricks on how you can increase the value of your property through the use of colour.

Kelly Jackson, owner of London-based company ONLYCHILD, told FEMAIL the little things you can do to make your home look more expensive.

She has collaborated with renowned designer Alexander McQueen, designed jewelry for A-list celebrities and designed several hotels from the UK to Australia.

Kelly said, “If you are bold and daring in your home color choices, you can really add a lot of fun and value to your home.”

Here she tells you how you can add a splash of color to your rooms… and put more money in your wallet.

Kelly Jackson, owner of London-based ONLYCHILD Studios, spoke to FEMAIL about small ways you can make your home look more expensive

1. Live in yellow

While many shy away from using such a bright color, Kelly says the warm tone can brighten the room and also make your property appear more valuable.

She said: “Yellow can literally fill a dull and uninspiring room with pure joy. There’s nothing better than an uplifting, bright and radiant living space, and yellow provides the perfect pop of colour in furniture and accessories.

“With this color, you can count on it to dramatically change the atmosphere of a room, thereby increasing the value of your home.”

While many may be afraid to use such a bright color, Kelly says it can brighten up the room and make your property look more expensive too

She designed the living space of The Barn, a two-bedroom 18th-century barn in the Cotswolds, using lots of yellow furniture to bring more life to the space.

Kelly said: “I chose an oversized yellow velvet sofa, complemented it with yellow upholstery and added yellow accents in some artwork and accessories. The room felt completely flat and boring when I first walked in.”

She added that you could even paint one wall of your home yellow if you’re going for a bolder look.

“Butter yellow is your friend if you’re looking for a more muted aesthetic that still adds a sense of warmth to your space,” she added.

However, bright red should be avoided in living rooms, she warned.

“It’s not impossible to pull off, but it’s certainly not easy and can very quickly become off-putting,” the designer added.

2. Stay calm in green

Green can evoke feelings of calm and serenity when you enter a room – but Kelly admits it has to be “done right”.

If you’re looking to improve your interior design skills, try out different colors before deciding on the right one. Kelly says shades of green often work well in the bedroom.

Kelly said it is best to avoid intensely bright green tones when it comes to painting bedroom walls
The designer said you could add a few houseplants like a monstera to add color to the room.

“In general, when painting bedroom walls, it’s best to avoid bright green tones and instead opt for greens with a creamy or grayish undertone,” she said.

“It can be difficult to get the right shade of green when painting walls, so be sure to get a large color palette to try out if you plan on venturing out with a color.”

For a very contemporary look, the artist recommends painting the doors, door frames and baseboards in a muted green.

“Add some low-maintenance tropical houseplants like a monstera, a few snake plants and maybe some creeping ivy in a hanging pot,” she said.

3. Pink to make the neighbors wink

Pink is often one of those colors that you either love or hate. But Kelly says you may be missing out on another opportunity to get more money for your property.

She particularly recommends a front door in a bold bubble gum color, as it attracts attention and “gives the impression that there is more to discover behind the door.”

This means it is perfect for those who are renovating their property or for people who want to renovate their home for profit.

Kelly said: “Using the pink in the hallway, cloakroom or downstairs toilet is a lovely way to connect indoor and outdoor spaces. This can be as adventurous as pink floor tiles throughout the hallway or as subtle as a bright pink framed piece of art on the wall.”

She said anyone wanting to achieve the pink front door look should make sure the paint job “looks professional” as dirty mistakes will ruin the aesthetic.

4. Customize your monochrome

If you are looking to change your main bathroom or downstairs toilet, black and white tiles can be a cost-effective way to increase the value of your property

If you’re looking to transform your master bathroom or downstairs toilet, black and white tile can be an inexpensive way to increase the value of your property, Kelly says.

“Monochrome is really a powerful way to add drama to your home and instantly transform a small space, whether that’s through the use of patterned wallpaper, alternating tiles or even a stunning rug or piece of art,” she said.

The designer said she likes to add contrasting black and white elements to her spaces, be it tiles in the bathroom, a checkered rug in the kitchen or a cowhide-patterned chair in the living room.

However, she warns that too many small, busy patterns can make rooms appear disjointed.

5. Eclectic Electric Blue

Kelly says eclectic accessories are one of the easiest and most effective ways to add colorful personality to your home.

“Your space should reflect your personality and at the same time be a space where you feel at home,” she said.

“There’s never been a better time to go wild with accessories, personal touches and unique pieces.”

While bold shades of blue may not be your thing, the design expert said artwork and accessories can be the “perfect way” to incorporate color to achieve the desired effect.

“The most important thing of all – especially if you want to create noticeable value for a potential buyer – is to always design carefully and avoid inappropriate shades of blue,” she said.
