The Expendables 5 has the opposite problem of any other big-budget ensemble action film series. Simply put: TheConsumables 4 — stylized as Expend4bles – was so poorly received that audiences may not have wanted a fifth installment in the series at all. The fourth installment in the Sylvester Stallone-directed action series used its $100 million budget to reinvent itself, but refused to commit to any actual change. First, the film lets Stallone’s Barney Ross die and makes way for Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas to lead the elite mercenaries. Unfortunately, Expend4bles grossed an embarrassing $51.1 million at the box office.

For most action franchises, a box office flop of this magnitude would be the final nail in the coffin, but the $840 million led by Jason Statham Consumables franchise could weather the storm. The series has always paid homage to action stars of the past while also capturing the blockbuster feel of ’80s action movies. There’s something about that formula that really resonates with genre fans, which is why the 2010 original film spawned so many sequels. Expend4bles was so bad that it could have officially jeopardized the series – and that’s exactly the opposite problem of any other action franchise.
