Call for entries: International design competition “NSW Housing Pattern Book”
The government of the Australian state of New South Wales is currently developing a “model book” of recommended housing designs that can be approved on a fast-track basis. The aim is to create new low-rise residential buildings and mid-rise apartment buildings in Sydney, Australia.
The best architects from all over the world are invited to participate in the International Design Competition for the NSW Housing Pattern Book to create great designs for Sydney and contribute to the diversity and depth of the pattern book.
Shaping the future of housing in Sydney
Sydney is at a pivotal moment: it is facing a housing crisis that has left it one of the three cities with the lowest property prices over the past 15 years. For too long, Sydney’s housing market has been dominated by either single-family homes or high-rise apartments, while neglecting the “missing middle” – terraced houses, townhouses and small apartment blocks – the kind of housing that is affordable and creates walkable and sustainable neighbourhoods.
To meet this challenge and create more affordable, inclusive and sustainable housing options in Sydney, the New South Wales Government is calling for bold, innovative design solutions that inspire imagination and help build vibrant communities in Sydney and New South Wales.
The Pattern Book Design Competition is open to the international design community, architects and students from around the world, inviting them to explore bold ideas and develop creative concepts to reimagine living in Sydney and NSW for the 21st century. The competition seeks homes that are simple, sustainable, adaptable, affordable and beautiful – homes that meet our needs at all stages of life, from raising children and working from home to ageing in place.
The Pattern Book Design Competition delivers more than just good ideas
This competition is more than just a call to creativity; it is an opportunity for architects from around the world to bring their visions for homes to life and prototype them. Supported by NSW Government organisations including Homes NSW, Landcom and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority, up to five sites across Greater Sydney will be busy transforming the competition winners’ innovative designs into real, built projects.
The competition process
The NSW Housing Pattern Book Design Competition is run through a two-stage process, led by the Government Architect NSW (GANSW) and supported by the Australian Institute of Architects. The first stage is an Expression of Interest (EOI) stage, where architects and students can express their interest without submitting design work. The second stage shortlists entrants who receive a competition fee to develop their ideas further.
The competition aims to provide a global, design-led exploration of housing ideas to support the development of a NSW Housing Pattern Book of pre-approved designs for two key housing typologies: the terraced house and the mid-rise apartment building (up to 6 storeys). These designs will reflect Sydney’s unique climate, character and cultural heritage, and provide affordable, habitable, buildable and replicable solutions.
Competition winners will also have the opportunity to work with GANSW to refine their designs for inclusion in the NSW Housing Pattern Book.
How you can participate
The first EOI period will commence on 2 July 2024 at 9:00am AEST and close on 9 August 2024 at 5:00pm AEST. Professional architects and architecture students are invited to register their interest at www.planning.nsw.gov.au/pattern-book-design-competition.
No design work is required at this stage – simply share your team’s skills, relevant portfolio and a statement valuing the task as outlined in the competition’s EOI brief.
Up to 21 participants (15 professionals and 6 students) will be selected for the second phase by September 2024. These teams will receive compensation for participation and have five weeks to develop their housing patterns.
At the end of this phase, the selected winners of the professional competition will have the honor of having their designs put into practice and built on a state-owned site.
Join the New South Wales Government and Government Architect NSW in tackling Sydney’s housing challenges and using your creativity and innovation to shape a better, more sustainable future for Sydney’s housing.
