Is a NASCAR Cup Series driver at risk of missing the Chicago street race?

Is a NASCAR Cup Series driver at risk of missing the Chicago street race?

Four NASCAR Cup Series teams will field non-chartered cars this Sunday afternoon at the Grant Park 165, the second race ever on the Chicago Street Course.

It is only the third time this season that there were more than three non-charter cars on the entry list for a Cup Series race in addition to the 36 regular charter entries.

There were 42 cars on the entry list for the Daytona 500, which opened the season at Daytona International Speedway in February. Since the number of participants in the Cup Series is now limited to 40 cars, two of them ultimately failed to qualify.

At the Coca-Cola 600 in May at Charlotte Motor Speedway, four non-chartered cars were on the entry list, meaning the field was full for only the second time in 2024 and included 40 cars. However, since there were no more than four, all registered cars were able to take part in the competition.

This should also be the case for Sunday’s 75-lap race on the 2.2-mile (3.541-kilometer) temporary street circuit with twelve turns in Chicago, Illinois.

There will be no DNQs this weekend, despite so many teams having new entries. Three two-car teams are expanding their roster to three cars: Kaulig Racing has added the No. 13 Chevrolet for AJ Allmendinger, Richard Childress Racing has added the No. 33 Chevrolet for Austin Hill, and RFK Racing has added the No. 60 Ford for Joey Hand.

MBM Motorsports is also set to make its fifth appearance in the 2024 season, with the company confirming it will field the No. 66 Ford for Josh Bilicki.
