Kendrick shares song excerpt at the beginning of the music video “Not Like Us”

Kendrick Lamar’s triumph continued last night (July 4) when he released the official music video for “Not Like Us.” The scathing diss of Drake, delivered six times at K. Dot’s The Pop Out: Ken And Friends concert last month, was paired with a video that included Easter eggs, innuendo, and a crowd of Los Angeles residents who came out to support him. To top it all off, Kendrick included a preview of a new song at the beginning of the video.

The highly anticipated clip opens with the “Money Trees” rapper in a dark hallway, just before an energetic beat kicks in and he delivers a few new bars with verve. “I was born again, I was stargazing/ Life goes on, I need all my babies/ Woke up and looked for the broccoli/ Hot key, keep your eye on the horn, that’s Kamasi/ IP ownership, the blueprint is mine/ Mister get-off, I’m getting off at my feet,” he raps.

Fans are already debating whether they’ll ever get the song in full. “The funny thing about Kendrick is there’s a 95 percent chance we’ll never hear the song he teased at the beginning,” wrote one X-user, to which someone else responded with a screenshot of the 2015 “Alright” music video. In that offering, Kendrick also teased a song at the beginning that was never officially released to this day.

After the snippet, the video for “Not Like Us” abruptly cuts to LA legend Tommy The Clown peering through a peephole. He asks, “What’s the password?”, which triggers the now infamous “I see dead people” whisper heard at the beginning of “Not Like Us.” Tommy then walks over to a PA system and the diss song starts blaring. The Dave Free-directed video, which currently has over 13 million views in less than 14 hours, included several references to the 6 God. Even the release date was intentional, as the release of Independence Day alluded to Kendrick calling the Toronto star a “colonizer” who tries to capitalize on African-American culture.

After the opening scene with Tommy, Kendrick is seen standing in a dimly lit environment as someone who looks like Drake on the cover of Dark Lane demo tapes – comes up from behind, but his attempt to jump on Kendrick fails.

In another scene, the Compton native does a set of push-ups while leaning on concrete blocks, which is a reference to Drake’s “Push Ups” diss, in which he told Kendrick, “Drop down and give me 50.” K. Dot also used the owl symbol several times throughout the video to taunt Drake. He is seen hitting an owl-shaped piñata and then locking an owl in a cage.
