On June 27, five commercial-grade canopies belonging to the Chino Kiwanis Club were stolen, the same day the club was preparing for its concert in the park at Chino City Hall.
Club members grill hot dogs and hamburgers and sell nachos, popcorn, candy, water and soda to support the club’s fundraisers, which include summer concerts and the Corn Feed Run.
Kiwanis President Brian Rachielles said the club was notified last week by a city employee that the Kiwanis trailer’s door was open and the lock was broken.
The trailer is normally parked in the back lot of the Chino Police Department, but during the concert series it will be moved to the Chino Civic Center area.
“We are quite frustrated because these canopies are the tool we need to raise money at our events,” said Mr. Rachielles. “The snack bar supplements our income.”
The 10-by-10-foot canopies are estimated to cost about $1,000 each.
Mr. Rachielles said Chino police had some extra canopies and brought them to the concert.
A report has been filed with the police, he added.
He said the canopies were so heavy that one person could barely move them. Stealing the canopies would most likely require a pickup truck.
“Ultimately, we are missing five large treetops and we are trying to figure out how to deal with that,” he said.
The canopies are blue and two of them bear the Chino Kiwanis logo.
