Major General Israel Ziv: Israel must avoid damaging war with Hezbollah – Israel News

Former Israeli Major General Israel Ziv recently spoke with Udi Segal and Anat Davidov on radio station 103FM about the military situation in the north and the Gaza Strip.

Regarding the northern sector, Ziv first said: “Nasrallah’s main thoughts in coordinating with the Iranians are the US positions. For them, the option of engaging Israel in a long war of attrition is convenient. They are already in it. How do we know? We see that there were enough opportunities to stop or reduce the attacks, but they are on their own. They understand that Israel is in a rather difficult situation in Gaza, for which there is no solution, while the situation in the north is very much in their favor. They were successful at the beginning of the war, and their attacks continue because they see that they are successfully destroying the settlements in the north and in the Galilee.”

“That’s why I think they will not be impressed if a few more battalions move north. The American position is the most critical issue for them. We are clear that they will have much less patience because the United States is entering the final phase of the elections. Although they are watching Israel, they are also focused on Washington.”

“Expanding military action is the wrong tactic unless Israel wants to enter a war – and I very much hope it does not want a war. A war in Lebanon after the existing war will most likely lead to Israel entering a war with Iran as well. This is the worst possible time for the State of Israel to open multiple fronts in the war. What is the goal? After nine months of war, do we have a good reason to start another one?”

Ziv concluded his remarks about the north by saying: “I am convinced that, given all our problems, we should not start a war whose goal we cannot define. If we decide to put Hezbollah in the same situation as Hamas, it will cause big problems.”

Ziv’s comments on the fighting in Gaza

“Staying in Rafah? That actually means occupying the Gaza Strip. That’s where the Rafah crossing is, an international border crossing. I’m not sure we’re able to get such an agreement. How can we monitor it from the outside? That’s a very difficult question if there’s no Egyptian cooperation. There’s no leadership of the war in Gaza and there’s no clarity on the situation from the government.”

Ziv concluded: “It is not that we will not be held accountable as occupiers in the end. In the eyes of the United Nations and the world, Israel has occupied the Gaza Strip. Very soon we will meet in The Hague and in the UN Security Council. The Americans are trying to stop this, but somehow Netanyahu manages to thwart these efforts.”
