Michigan Rep. Neil Friske arrested early Thursday in Lansing

A sitting Michigan state congressman was arrested in Lansing in the early hours of Thursday morning and was still in police custody when the House session began.

Republican Rep. Neil Friske of Charlevoix was arrested in Lansing and remained in custody Thursday, Lansing Police Department spokesman Jordan Gulkins confirmed to the Free Press. Gulkins said possible charges against Friske are still being reviewed and would not disclose the reason for Friske’s arrest. If charges are filed, the arraignment will take place Friday or Saturday, Gulkins said.

Lansing-based political publication MIRS News first reported on Friske’s arrest.

Friske is a first-term Republican representative representing Michigan’s 107th congressional district, which includes all of Charlevoix and Emmet counties and parts of Cheboygan, Chippewa and Mackinac counties, and spans both peninsulas. He has filed for re-election and is seeking a second term in the House in the fall. According to his website, he is the owner of Friske and Sons Property Management.

He is also considered one of the more conservative representatives and is a member of the House Freedom Caucus. The caucus describes itself as “focused on traditional conservative values and individual freedom.”

A spokesman for House Republican Leader Matt Hall (R-Richland Township) did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday morning.

This is an evolving story.
