Here are all the different ways Michigan owns Ohio State

Michigan fans had to endure two decades of Buckeye dominance from 2000-2019, but that pain and agony almost seems like an eternity ahead of the 2024 season. As it stands today, Michigan is currently enjoying a three-game winning streak against Ohio State, has won three consecutive Big Ten championships, defeated Alabama in the Rose Bowl in the 2024 CFP semifinals and won the 2024 national championship in January. To say the last three seasons have been “entertaining” for Michigan football fans would be a massive understatement.

One of the most gratifying aspects of the recent success for Michigan fans has been the reaction from Ohio State fans. While some have directed their anger at head coach Ryan Day (who is now 1-3 against the Wolverines), most of the Buckeye faithful have found various ways to cope with the repeated losses. From bad weather to “cheating allegations,” there’s seemingly no excuse a Buckeye fan won’t use to make themselves feel better after the last three meetings. But no matter how hard they try, the brutal reality for the folks in Columbus is that Michigan owns Ohio State.

Total wins: Michigan (1,004)

The Michigan Wolverines are the all-time winningest team in all of college football and the only team to surpass the 1,000-win mark. Ohio State currently stands at 964 all-time wins. Given the trajectory of both teams, there is no indication that the Buckeyes will catch the Wolverines in our lifetime.

Best head-to-head record of all time: Michigan (61-6-51)

Even after the Buckeyes went 17-3 from 2000 to 2019, the Wolverines still hold a 10-game head-to-head advantage. It will be interesting to see how that record changes in the future, especially given the possibility that the two bitter rivals could meet multiple times in the same season thanks to the revamped B10 conference and expanded CFP.

Current winning streak: Michigan (3)

Michigan’s 2021 victory over Ohio State in the Big House will forever be remembered as the game that helped change the course of the rivalry. The Wolverines had an 8-game losing streak against the Buckeyes before this matchup, and guys like Aidan Hutcinson and Hassan Haskins were determined to end that streak. Not only did Michigan get the win, the Wolverines pressured the Buckeyes all afternoon and won 42-27. Things got even worse for Ohio State in 2022, as the Wolverines marched into Columbus and crushed the Buckeyes 45-23 in their own stadium. The game was a bit closer when the rivalry returned to Ann Arbor in 2023, but the end result was the same – Michigan 30, Ohio State 24.

Longest winning streak: Michigan (9)

Who can forget that magical period of 1901-1909? I understand, that was a long time ago. But we can’t just pick and choose any timeline that fits our narratives (unless you’re a Buckeye).

Biggest win: Michigan (86-0)

Speaking of that magical 9-game winning streak mentioned above, it also included the biggest win in the rivalry’s history. The date was October 25, 1902, and the Wolverines beat the Buckeyes 82-0 in Ann Arbor. The beauty of that record is that it will never be broken. Michigan will own it forever.

Conference Championships: Michigan (45)

This game is a little closer between the two programs, but Michigan still comes out on top. The Wolverines’ 45 conference championships are the most in the Big Ten conference, while Ohio State is second with 39.

National Championships: Michigan (12)

There was once an old running joke that Michigan’s national championships all came before the invention of the first MP3 player, but winning the 2024 national championship helped bury that story. The reality is that the Michigan Wolverines are currently the reigning national champions of college football, and that’s a harsh reality for folks in Columbus.
