Ariana Grande clarifies that her voice change in the viral podcast video was not a mistake – or magic.

In a clip from her co-star Penn Badgley’s podcast “Podcrushed” from the “The Boy is Mine” music video, Grande speaks to the former “Gossip Girl” star in a low-pitched voice. She then turns to his podcast co-host Sophie Ansari and speaks in a high-pitched voice – similar to the falsetto that made her famous.

The video quickly went viral. On TikTok, a clip of the exchange, which has more than 1 million likes, captivated viewers, who pointed out the change in Grande’s voice.

But the pop star defended herself against the criticism (and jokes) in the comments on the video.

Ariana Grande recruits Brandy and Monica for the remix of “The Boy is Mine”

“Habit (of speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health 🙂 🍵,” she captioned the viral TikTok clip. “I intentionally change my vocal pitch (high/low) often depending on how much I sing 😭 I’ve always done it this way, BYE.”

One user posted on X: “This voice change makes me think Ariana came out for a second.” Fans said Grande was reprising her role as her “Wicked” character Glinda, the good witch in the live-action adaptation of the captivating Broadway musical.

“GLINDA LET HER GO,” one user commented, while another defended the “We Can’t Be Friends” hitmaker, writing, “I find her ‘Glinda voice’ is more comfortable for her singing than her ‘normal voice’ but Glinda is a big part of her too.” Another joked that “SHE’S STILL THERE,” in reference to Grande’s “Wicked” character.

Part one of the film is set to hit theaters Thanksgiving weekend. The highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters on November 27th – the same day as another highly anticipated musical, Disney’s “Moana 2.” “Wicked Part Two” will hit theaters a year later on November 26th, 2025.

Brandy and Monica headline Ariana Grande’s “The Boy Is Mine” remix

Earlier this week, 30-year-old Grande announced he wanted to inject a touch of nostalgia into pop music, surprising fans by announcing that powerful R&B singers will feature on the remix of “The Boy Is Mine,” which is set to drop this Friday.

“I…..can’t believe this is true (I don’t know if I’ll believe it for long after it’s out). My deepest and most sincere thanks go out to Brandy and Monica, not only for being with me in this moment, but for their generosity, their kindness, and for the countless ways they have inspired me,” the two-time Grammy winner wrote on Instagram. “It’s almost impossible to express how much this means to me.”

She added: “This is a celebration of you both and the impact you have had on every singer, vocal producer, musician and artist creating today. I looooooove you both so much.”

The reunion of Brandy and Monica in the Grande video came two decades after the original “The Boy Is Mine,” another song by the pair that was released after an alleged feud. Brandy and Monica later won Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group at the 1999 Grammys.

The two R&B legends also surprised their fans with an appearance as news anchors in the music video for the song.
