Prosecutors are now investigating the death of Dvontaye Mitchell at the Hyatt Regency in the city center

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the death of Dvontaye Mitchell. He died Sunday outside the downtown Hyatt Regency.

According to police, Mitchell entered the hotel, caused a disturbance and was escorted out by security personnel.

The video shows four Hyatt security guards outside on Mitchell. When police arrived, he was dead.

According to Hyatt, these security guards have since been suspended.

“They murdered my child. I want them to see this and I want them to know that we want justice to be done,” said Brenda Giles, Mitchell’s mother.

Five days have passed since Mitchell’s death and his mother told TMJ4 it was time for answers.

“My frustration lies with the security people. No one has been charged in this case. They are trying to sweep it under the rug and we are not going to let it go under the rug,” Giles said.

Giles said she hasn’t heard from Milwaukee police since Sunday, when detectives came to her home and told her Mitchell was dead.

“They just say, ‘Okay, another dead black man is dead.’ And that’s how I feel,” Giles added.

A video of the incident shows four Hyatt security guards lying on top of Mitchell and holding him down for several minutes as he pleads for help and can be heard saying, “I’m sorry.”

“They were on top of him until the police came, after he was already dead. They were on top of him even after he was dead. They were still on top of him. Make this shit make sense. Sorry, but make it make sense,” Giles said.

This mother said she can’t get this scene out of her head.

“I kept watching this video and thinking, is that really my child?” Giles wondered.

On Wednesday, the family went to see Mitchell’s body. Giles said she was shocked by how he looked.

“It looked like one side of his face was smashed. It was smashed, yes, it was smashed. It was just swollen all over,” she described.

After Hyatt sent a general apology statement on Sunday, we continued to ask questions and have sent several emails since then.

Friday afternoon we received this statement:

“We extend our deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Mr. Mitchell. We are working expeditiously with the hotel operator, Aimbridge Hospitality, to understand the full extent of what happened. We know that Aimbridge Hospitality is conducting a thorough investigation and has suspended the employees involved in the incident. The hotel is fully cooperating with the Milwaukee Police Department and we cannot release any further details at this time.”

A spokesperson for Aimbridge Hospitality sent us this statement:

“We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Mitchell’s family and loved ones. We continue to do everything we can to assist with the ongoing law enforcement investigation into this incident and have no further comment at this time. We remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all hotel guests and employees.”

No one has been arrested or charged in connection with Mitchell’s death.

“If anyone has a heart, just help us with this. We need everyone’s opinion here, everyone. I want this to happen nationwide. This should not have happened to my child,” Giles said.

On Saturday, the family will hold a memorial service at noon in front of the Hyatt Regency.

On Monday, they plan to hold a press conference with their attorney, Ben Crump. Crump represented the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.
