Backstage details on plans for AEW star Chris Jericho in CMLL

Since the official announcement of the collaboration between AEW and CMLL, fans in Mexico have been able to enjoy live performances by artists such as Blackpool Combat Club, Willow Nightingale and Mercedes Mone. However, fans at Arena Mexico were left completely stunned on June 28th when Chris Jericho attacked the company’s star, Mistico.

Jericho arrived wearing a Mistico mask and attacked the luchador after his match. He left his “The Learning Tree” gimmick at the border and reprised his “Corazon de Leon” gimmick, the name he used when he originally wrestled for CMLL between 1993 and 1995. He wanted to challenge Mistico to a match at a later date, which Mistico accepted, but at the time of writing there has been no official announcement. In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer revealed some more details on how the former AEW World Champion came to appear in CMLL.

Meltzer noted that the appearance was a complete surprise to everyone, especially those in attendance. Many fans had assumed that Jericho would make an appearance in CMLL at some point, but it was just a matter of waiting for the right moment. As for the match with Mistico, there has been heavy speculation that the company’s 91st anniversary show in September will be the setting for the match, with an official announcement expected in the near future. CMLL commentators had originally assumed that the match would take place the week after Jericho’s appearance, but that was not the case. Meltzer also noted that the main reason Jericho never worked for AAA in recent years, despite both the company and fans desperately wanting to see him, as he is friends with booker Konnan and AEW has a working relationship with them, was because his price was too high.
