2 boaters missing on Lake Michigan near Whiting, Indiana

WHITING, Ind. (CBS) – On Friday evening, emergency crews searched Lake Michigan for two missing boaters who jumped into the water near Whiting, Indiana.

Officials said a boat with 12 people on board was traveling on the lake near Whiting. At about 2:30 p.m., one person jumped out of the boat to go swimming.

According to Alex Neel, Indiana State Conservation Officer, they began to struggle because of the winds and waves that were on the water at the time.

The people on the boat tried to get closer to him, but due to the conditions, it was not possible. A second person then jumped into the water, but both began to struggle in the water.

A third person put on a life jacket and also jumped into the water.

Police received a 911 call at about 2:40 p.m. Rescue workers found the boat about a mile and a half offshore. Officers from the police marine unit boarded a small motorboat that had been damaged near the mouth of Indiana Harbor, near the Inland Steel plant.

The U.S. Coast Guard found the person wearing the life jacket, took him to a local hospital, and later released him.

The other two men were not found.

Neel said no foul play was suspected and no charges had been filed in connection with the incident.

Due to the conditions on the lake, emergency services have suspended their search. The search will continue on Saturday morning.
