Why Jack Antonoff seemingly overshadowed Billie Eilish

Entertainment gossip and news from the Newsweek staff network

Rumors are rife on social media that Jack Antonoff may have made a subtle dig at singer Billie Eilish.

During an interview on Today In the segment, which was posted to the show’s YouTube channel on Thursday, July 4, Taylor Swift’s producer talked about his band Bleacher’s new self-titled album and his songwriting process.

Antonoff, 40, noted that his inspiration often comes from emotionally powerful experiences rather than mundane events, citing a great sandwich as an example. “It’s hard to write unless you’re really forced to, and sometimes it’s much more serious things that force you to do it. I never feel like… You don’t hear a lot of great songs about your lunch order. So the things that you don’t really understand and that cause you pain are usually the things worth writing about,” he said.

Although the comment may seem harmless, it was interpreted by some as an insult to 22-year-old Eilish. Her latest album, Hit me hard and softfeatures a lead single titled “Lunch.” Although the song isn’t really about food, but rather her attraction to women, Antonoff’s remark sparked debate online.

In a post shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) about the alleged shadow of Pop DesireFans were quick to share their opinions in the replies. “Jack Antonoff has become more and more annoying as time goes on. He acts hypocritically. In my opinion,” one user said, insulting the musician. Others supported Antoff, saying things like, “I’m crying he doesn’t even know about the song 😭” and “He didn’t insult Billie, her stupid fans are just attacking him because he’s associated with Taylor.”

In an interview in March with BillboardEilish expressed her frustration with what she saw as wasteful practices in the music industry, with some thinking the “All I Ever Wanted” singer was poking fun at Swift. “We live in a time where for some reason it’s very important for some artists to make all kinds of different vinyl and packaging,” she said, before continuing, “I can’t tell you how wasteful that is. It’s right under our noses and people just keep getting away with it.” The singer later claimed the remarks weren’t directed at a specific artist, but at the industry as a whole.

This remark also comes after Swift pushed Eilish off the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart for the second week in a row.
