Synchronization of aircraft was easy

You think scoring cartoons is easy? According to John Cleese, you’re right.

“That’s the whole appeal,” the comedy legend told Yahoo! of his role in Disney’s “Planes,” a spin-off of Pixar’s ever-popular “Cars.” “It’s the most enjoyable work I do. And the reason it’s so enjoyable is because there’s almost no stress.”

(Monty Python movie reunion stalled?)

The founder of “Monty Python”, now 73 years old, also told us that he thinks the dubbing technique of English actors is better than that of their American colleagues: “(They) always put emphasis on the deep emotions.”

So how does John convey the emotional spirit of an airplane? Of course, he takes inspiration from Laurence Olivier.

“I’m not doing anything mystical or anything like that. I mean, I suppose there are moments where you think, ‘Wait a minute, he’s an airplane. How would he look at that?’ But no, really.”

“I often think of the line Laurence Olivier said to (Dustin Hoffman on the set of ‘Marathon Man’). He was explaining how much effort he had put into creating the role and Oliver said, ‘Why don’t you just play it?’ And that’s basically my attitude.”

Well, at least he’s honest. Watch the rest of our interview with Cleese above.

“Planes,” starring Dane Cook, Teri Hatcher and Val Kilmer, will be released in the UK on August 16, 2013.
