A participant in this year’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, which takes place on July 4, caused quite a stir – literally – even though he was ultimately not named the winner.
The moment occurred during the soda-eating contest that has been held between the men’s and women’s hot dog-eating contest for four years. In a video captured by a spectator, the contestant with the orange mohawk can be seen spitting out the liquid uncontrollably after drinking only about a third of his gallon.
With each subsequent bout of vomiting, the crowd reacted in shock and horror. “Guys, I looked away, but I heard Elvis leave the building,” the announcer was heard saying as an organizer escorted the still-puking man off the stage.
The incident reportedly delayed the men’s hot dog eating contest by five minutes as organizers rushed to clean up the mess.
Ultimately, four-time undefeated champion Eric “Badlands” Booker won the competition again this year, downing his gallon of soda in just 21 seconds, beating his previous record of 23.58 seconds and setting a brand new world record. Booker holds several Guinness World Records, including the fastest time to drink two liters of soda, which he set in 2021 at 18.45 seconds.
This wasn’t the only record set at this year’s competition, reigning women’s champion Miki Sudo managed to set a new world record for the women’s title by chomping down an impressive 51 hot dogs in 10 minutes, earning her 10th pink belt.
“Turning 50 is a milestone for all women and I’m really excited to be a part of it,” she later told New York Post.
On the men’s side, 39-year-old Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago took home the Mustard Belt after eating 58 hot dogs. It was the first time since 2015 that a competitor other than Joey Chestnut won the event, as Chestnut did not take part in this year’s competition due to a dispute with organizers over his decision to represent rival brand Impossible Foods.
Although Bertoletti beat his previous record of 55 sausages, he still fell well short of the record of 76 sausages set by Chestnut in 2021. “I didn’t want to stop eating until the job was done,” he said after his win.
