Batman director’s Arkham Asylum series receives very bad news

Batman director’s Arkham Asylum series receives very bad news

A planned Max series set in Arkham Asylum will not continue. According to reports the streamer has pulled the plug on the show after spending years in development hell.

According to Variety, an unnamed source with knowledge of the production revealed that the project was abandoned about four years after it was first announced. It’s possible that another series set in Arkham Asylum could be developed at some point in the future, but that would be something completely different from the now-canceled project. The Batman Director Matt Reeves served as producer on the project, which was initially conceived as a spin-off of the film directed by Robert Pattinson.

In 2020, the project was in development, with Terrence Winter attached to serve as writer and executive producer. It was originally planned to have a greater focus on the officers of the Gotham Police Department. Winter left the project in November 2020 due to creative differences, giving the Arkham Asylum show one of the first major setbacks. He was replaced as writer by Joe Barton, who eventually left the project as well. In 2022, Reeves said the series had evolved into a series set in Arkham Asylum, and Antonio Campos was hired as writer and showrunner.

The Arkham Asylum series has been changed to be set in the DCU

Meanwhile, James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of DC Studios shortly after Campos joined the series. Updates on the Arkham show were then scarce before Gunn revealed in December 2023 that the show was still in the works and Reeves would serve as a producer, but that it would now be set in the DCU and not in the same world as The Batman. Since then, not much has been announced about the project, but it seems that those in charge finally felt it was time to just abandon it.
