The TV series Arkham Asylum has been canceled

The television series Arkham Asylum, which is in development for the streaming service Max, will not be continued.

According to Variety, the Arkham Asylum TV series has been canceled. The series, which was developed for Max, was in the works for several years, with a handful of creatives coming and going.

When the series was announced four years ago, Arkham Asylum was not the focus. Instead, it was supposed to be about the Gotham City Police Department. Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) was supposed to be the spin-off of Matt Reeves’ The Batmanbut Winter left the series due to creative differences. Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project) then joined the series, only to leave when the focus shifted to Arkham Asylum. The studio then hired Antonio Campos (The stairs), but it seems the series just wasn’t destined to do so. However, a person familiar with the situation told Variety that a new Arkham Asylum project could emerge in the future.

Matt Reeves confirmed in 2022 that the GCPD series has evolved and is now more focused on Arkham Asylum.”The thing with the GCPD, that story has somehow evolved,“, said Reeves. “We’re actually moving more into the realm of what exactly would happen in the world of Arkham, based on our movie, and some of the (evil) characters, back to their origins. It’s almost like Arkham is like a horror movie or a haunted house. The idea of Gotham being a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character, so that you go into that environment and encounter these characters in a way that feels really fresh. In our work on Gotham, that story started to develop and we felt like, “Wait, we should really get into this.” And that’s kind of the direction it’s gone.“The series was developed before James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of DC Studios, and Gunn later took to social media to say that while the project was still in the works, it would be a DCU show and not a direct spin-off of The Batman.

Arkham Asylum has not yet been released, but a Batman-related TV series called The Penguin is in the works. It is set after the events of The BatmanIn the upcoming series, Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot. The series will air on Max on 8 September. As for Batman – Part IIthe film is for a October 2, 2026 release.
