Chris Jericho advocates for the inclusion of pro wrestling in the Olympic Games

Chris Jericho is a true veteran in the world of pro wrestling and he is proud of his profession for good reason and always voices his opinion, no matter how controversial it is. Nevertheless, he believes that pro wrestling more than deserves to be part of the Olympic Games.

It is a well-known fact that professional wrestling often struggles for recognition in the wider sporting landscape due to misconceptions about its staged nature as opposed to its status as a staged performing art.

While speaking on the Blocks Podcast, Chris Jericho touched on various aspects of the industry’s entertainment and longevity. Jericho suggested that professional wrestling could potentially be included in the Olympics, similar to sports like figure skating or synchronized swimming, which are scored on points. He emphasized the athletic performance between two competitors as a key aspect that could justify inclusion as an Olympic sport.

“I started thinking seriously about how professional wrestling could easily become an Olympic sport, since it is a sporting performance between two people, similar to figure skating or synchronized swimming or anything else that is scored on points.”

Le Champion spoke about the concept of international wrestlers working together to present performances that are judged on their technical ability rather than the results of the fight. For example, he envisioned wrestlers like himself and Kenny Omega from Canada preparing a routine while their counterparts from England, like Will Ospreay and Michael Oku, do the same.

“Think about it. So let’s say I’m from Canada. Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, the best wrestlers from Canada. We put together our routine, and then you have Will Ospreay and Michael Oku from England. They put together their routine.

Then you met Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson from the USA, who put together their routine. Then the judges said, “Okay, that was the best. It doesn’t matter who wins or loses. Just like in figure skating.”

Whether professional wrestling could ever become part of the Olympics is still uncertain, but Jericho’s idea probably has something to it, so we’ll have to wait and see if professional wrestling becomes part of the Olympics one day.
