Pomona Concert Band presents summer concert series at Ganesha Park – Daily Bulletin

The Pomona Concert Band presents its 77th annual summer concert series on Thursday evenings, July 11 through August 29, in the G. Stanton Selby Bandshell behind the community center in Ganesha Park in Pomona.

The band is sponsored by the City of Pomona and admission to all concerts is free. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs. There will be a food stand, but people can also bring their own picnic.

The series begins July 11 with “Musical Masters, Past and Present,” featuring music by old masters of music and select new, emerging composers. The program includes the overture to “Candide” by Leonard Bernstein and “Of Heroes and Demons” by Rob Romeyn, and tuba soloist Stephen Klein will play “Largo al factotum” by Gioachino Rossini.

The band will be conducted by Linda Taylor, the band’s musical director, and Jorge Garcia and Kerry Kline, assistant directors. Paula Lantz will serve as master of ceremonies.

“Movie Madness” is the motto of the concert on July 18, which will feature music from Hollywood films conducted by seven band members. According to a press release, the conductors will be trombonist Fiona Karbel, trumpeters Christopher Northrop, Liza Zumbrunnen and Denny Duran-Flores, drummers Lucas Critchfield and James Thompson, and David Schaafsma from the tuba section.

Jorge Garcia will conduct the band at the July 25 concert, which will feature his composition “March for a Marine.” The “Songs of Influence” concert will feature music written for special occasions, and Linda Taylor will serve as master of ceremonies.

“Musica de America Latina” is the theme of the concert on August 1, with “Mexican Folk Fantasy,” “El Relicario,” “Granada,” “Solamente Una Vez,” and “Gaucho Carnival.” Debra Martin will be the mistress of ceremonies.

The program for August 8 is “Kerry’s Awesome Concert” featuring music selected by Assistant Director Kerry Kline, including “Flourish for Winds,” “Voices of the Sky,” “As Summer Was Just Beginning,” and “The Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa. Linda Taylor will serve as emcee.

The August 15 concert is called “A Night With John Williams” and will feature music by Williams, including “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” “Symphonic Suite Star Wars III” and music from “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Steve Lustro will serve as master of ceremonies.

The band will play “Linda’s Favorites” at the August 22 concert. Taylor has selected music for that concert, including “The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” which features the band’s low instruments, “Rise of the Firebird,” “Land of Liberty” and “The Standard of St. George” by Kenneth Alford. Southern California News Group columnist David Allen will serve as master of ceremonies.

The final concert of the series on August 29 is “Music That Makes America Great” and will feature music by American composers or written in honor of the United States. The program includes “Irvin Berlin Showstoppers,” “Gershwin on Broadway” and “Armed Forces Salute.” Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval will be the master of ceremonies.

Before the Thursday series ends, there is a Sunday concert on August 25th at 6 p.m. At this concert, the Pomona Concert Band hosts the Golden State British Brass Band. Jack Hollander conducts the brass band and plays a selection of British brass music as well as some American classics.
