Why Chris Jericho turned down the first pitch for an unexpected return – TJR Wrestling

Chris Jericho has explained how he made his first return to Arena Mexico in nearly 30 years as he prepares for a big dream match.

Chris Jericho shocked everyone when he attacked Mistico at the CMLL Super Viernes show on June 28. Jericho then challenged Mistico to a match, which the Mexican star accepted.

On “Talk Is Jericho,” Chris Jericho explained how his return to Arena Mexico came about, saying the idea came about while he was competing against luchadores in AEW:

It was a big surprise this week when Corazon de Leon returned to Arena Mexico. I was in Mexico from 1992 to 1995 and last wrestled in Arena Mexico on September 15, 1995. It was really cool to return to Mexico City. So how did that come about?

We started working with CMLL in AEW and when I was going through the transition between Kenny Omega and the Golden Jets, Kenny got sick and Sammy (Guevara) and I were kind of a team and that didn’t really work out well and then Sammy got suspended so I did some Corazon de Leon and worked with some luchadores.

I had a match with Titan, I had a match with Atlantis Jr. and it occurred to me that with this new relationship with CMLL and AEW, maybe it would be cool to go back to Arena Mexico and have a match.

Chris Jericho had to start all over again

Jericho then addressed the fact that his contract to compete at Arena Mexico came at a time when AEW was also sending other stars there, and revealed that he had turned down the original offer to compete in a tag team match:

Meanwhile, the BCC and Matt Sydal, who was filling in for the injured Wheeler Yuta, went to Arena Mexico and played a match and just had the best time. The crowd was so incredible and everyone was super excited and I really realized it was time for me to return to Arena Mexico, a full circle sort of thing.

I’ve wrestled a few times in Mexico with WWE since then. But never at Arena Mexico, which is owned by the Lutteroth family and is the oldest wrestling company in the world. It’s one of the oldest arenas in the world and is called the Cathedral of Lucha Libre. So I just started talking to Rocky Romero and letting him know that I was open to coming back. Rocky is kind of like a liaison from AEW to CMLL and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, so he’s very valuable.

We just started discussing what I could do. What would be a great match and who could I do something good with? We decided that Mistico would be the perfect match, almost a dream match between Chris Jericho, Corazon de Leon (and) Mistico. So we negotiated with them and they came back with the original idea of doing a tag team match, which I didn’t like.

Then we went back to the drawing board and came up with the idea of playing a single game again. That’s what we decided to do. Then the negotiations start and it’s always great to get something for what you do, but this isn’t so much about the money, it’s just about going back to the place where I got my first experience.

There is no confirmation yet as to when the match between Chris Jericho and Mistico will take place, but CMLL will hold its 91st anniversary show on September 13th at Arena Mexico.
