New series shows gymnast Simone Biles’ fight to return to the Olympic Games

Part 1 of the new series will be released before the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

A new documentary series about legendary gymnast Simone Biles and her path back to the Olympic Games is set to be released before the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The upcoming “Simone Biles Rising” gives fans and viewers a glimpse into some of the Olympian’s video diaries and shows her struggle to return to competitive sport after withdrawing from several events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics three years ago.

“I knew it was going to be a long journey, but for me it wasn’t over yet,” Biles says in the trailer for the Netflix documentary series.

The two-part series explores what happened to Biles, who withdrew from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to “twisties,” a condition in which the body and mind are out of sync. The series takes viewers along as she processes the traumas from her past, learns to manage her mental health and prepares for her journey that may lead to her third Olympics.

“Sometimes you have to get that strength back,” Biles says in the trailer, after adding that she felt she might have given up gymnastics if it weren’t for the support of her family and friends.

The producers of “Simone Biles Rising” promise that the series “will not only inspire, but also amplify necessary conversations about the challenges athletes face with their mental health.”

The documentary series also offers insights into Biles’ personal life, including that of her husband, Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens, who also appears in the trailer.

Biles, 27, is preparing to compete in the 2024 U.S. Olympic team trials next week and recently set a new record by winning his ninth U.S. all-around title.

“It’s wonderful to see her come back to Tokyo three years ago and be the one to write her own story and write her own ending,” USA Today columnist Christine Brennan told “Good Morning America.”

In a statement, Biles said gymnastics is what she does, not who she is. She also said she looks forward to people seeing a different side of her outside of competition.

Part 1 of “Simone Biles” premieres on July 17. Part 2 will be released later this year.
